Chinese Lemon Chicken Recipe

Chinese Lemon Chicken has a wonderfully sweet and tangy flavor. The crunch of the chicken blended with a zesty lemon sauce makes a perfect flavor combination. This recipe is closely related to our Chinese Orange Chicken recipe.

Of course we could call our local Chinese restaurant and order take out but most of the time we prefer to make it ourselves. It's always nice to make an MSG free meal for our family and since our kids just love this lemon chicken recipe it's a winner in our book.

Another benefit of making this at home is, we get to sneak in some healthy vegetables. By pouring some of the lemon sauce on them, they magically get eaten by the most finicky eaters.

 

Chinese Lemon Chicken Recipe


Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite sized pieces
  • 1/2 tsp white pepper
  • 3 cups vegetable oil
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • Sesame Seeds


Marinade:

  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce
  • 1/2 tsp Sesame Oil
  • 1/4 tsp Baking Soda


Sauce:

  • 2 cloves Minced Garlic
  • 2 tsp Lemon Zest
  • 3 tbls Lemon Juice
  • 1/2 cup Chicken Stock
  • 1 1/2-inch piece of Minced Ginger
  • 1/4 cup Sugar
  • 1 tbls Cornstarch mixed in 1/4 cup of cool water

 

Preparation:

Marinate the Chicken

  1. Combine the soy sauce, baking soda and sesame oil.
  2. Put the chicken and marinade in a sealable bag and let sit for 15 - 20 minutes.

Cook the Chicken

  1. In a large bowl combine the 1 cup cornstarch and white pepper.
  2. Remove chicken from bag and toss the cubes in the cornstarch mixture. You can do them all at once in a large sealable plastic bag.
  3. Heat the 3 cups of oil in your wok or frying pan.
  4. Once oil is hot, add chicken in batches and deep-fry until all sides are golden brown, about 4 to 5 minutes.
  5. Remove chicken and let drain on a few layers of paper towels
  6. Cook the rest of the chicken. 

Make the Sauce

  1. Heat on medium high, 1 Tablespoon of oil in a medium sized pot.
  2. Add the minced garlic and ginger and cook briefly about 30 seconds.
  3. Add the chicken stock, lemon juice, lemon zest and sugar.
  4. Stir and simmer until the liquid is reduced to half.
  5. Add the cornstarch and water and stir until the sauce thickens.
  6. Remove from the heat, and mix the fried chicken in the sauce.
  7. Sprinkle with Sesame Seeds.
  8. Serve over white rice and your favorite veggies
